Amazon’s Ring enters smart lock market with $249 battery-backup device
Investing.com -- Amazon.com Inc's (NASDAQ: AMZN) Ring brand is expanding into hardware security with the announcement of its first-ever smart lock, taking aim at an established market dominated by traditional lockmakers. The device, priced at $249 and scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2027, introduces a manual power dial designed to eliminate battery failure concerns, a persistent pain point for connected door hardware.
The product entry marks a strategic attempt by Amazon to solidify its smart home ecosystem around the entry point of the household. Beyond mechanical innovation, the lock leverages Amazon Sidewalk connectivity to process remote commands and access management without depending on residential Wi-Fi networks.
By entering the category, Ring positions itself against established category leaders including Schlage, August, and Yale, as well as tech rivals expanding their hardware footprints. Notably, the announcement comes after Bloomberg reported that Apple Inc. is pursuing its own smart lock ambitions through a partnership with LG Electronics Inc., signaling intensifying competition across the connected home sector.
For Amazon, hardware hardware expansion serves as a catalyst to drive deeper integration across its consumer hardware portfolio, including Ring doorbells and Alexa-enabled Echo devices. However, commercial adoption remains subject to regulatory approval, as the device has not yet received final authorization from the Federal Communications Commission.
