Canaccord: 'we think HUBS is clearly pricing in a permanently impaired growth outlook'

Canaccord analyst David Hynes reiterated a Buy rating and $300.00 price target on HubSpot Inc (NYSE: HUBS).

The analyst comments "

Just a couple of weeks after an Analyst Day in which management emphasized driving operating leverage in the face of slower growth, HubSpot is cutting ~7% of its workforce. Even so, management framed this more as a reorganization than a cost program. Product teams will now be organized around customer outcomes instead of Hubs, management layers are coming out, and freed-up resources are being redeployed. Role eliminations should be largely complete by the end of Q1'27, with related charges ($65-75M, excluded from non-GAAP) landing largely in Q4'26. HubSpot also reaffirmed Q3 and FY26 guidance and its longer-term margin targets. Investors seem to be receiving the news in stride, with shares roughly flat.

The question in our minds is how much of this ultimately flows through to margins. On HubSpot's last earnings call, management said explicitly that the 200-300 bps of margin expansion embedded in its 2027 targets assumed no headcount actions. By our rough math, this RIF is worth ~$120-150M of gross annualized savings, or ~3 points of C2027E margin, yet its 2027 target was only reaffirmed. In other words, we'd expect a good mix of reinvestment, combined with better optionality for margin upside next year. As for the likely destinations for reinvestment, we’d say GTM engineering capacity needed for a more proof-led sales motion as well as additional buffer against potential AI-driven gross margin compression.

The bear case here is pretty straightforward. Companies rarely flatten their org when things are going well, and HubSpot is reshuffling both product and GTM in the middle of a pricing transition, just as it heads into its seasonally largest quarter. Two things temper that in our view. First, reaffirmed guidance largely removes the risk that this restructuring is cover for another reset. Second, protecting revenue-generating capacity was an explicit selection criterion, which suggests the cuts skew to management layers rather than quota.

The other telling signal here is that HubSpot is organizing away from its Hubs. Multi-Hub cross-sell has long been its core expansion engine, and it’s also a major component of what has weakened in this reset. Q2's NRR pressure sat in Hub attach and edition upgrades, while seats and credits remained net positive. Organizing teams around outcomes matches the seats-plus-credits pricing and the merged sales and customer success motion outlined last month at HubSpot's FAD. It's also a bet that outcome-based consumption replaces Hub attach as the company's primary expansion vector. The strategic logic here remains consistent, though it's also commercially unproven, and a reorg doesn't change the timing question on AI monetization.

Taking this to the stock, at just ~11x EV/FCF on C2027E, we think HUBS is clearly pricing in a permanently impaired growth outlook, with little credit for a credible medium-term path to 30% margins. This news does little to settle the growth debate, but it does strengthen the earnings support that we'd argue leaves room for upside from here. Reiterate BUY."
