Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE: CLF) hosted U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson, and Under Secretary of Commerce William Kimmitt at its Butler Works facility on Tuesday, October 6, to highlight the company's Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) expansion project.

The project involves a $200 million investment at the Butler Works facility in Butler, Pennsylvania, supported by a $75 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy. The expansion is expected to increase GOES production volume at the facility by up to 25%, with project completion anticipated in early 2028.

Upgrades include the installation of new induction reheat furnaces manufactured in Warren, Ohio, along with other infrastructure improvements. The company says these changes will improve steel quality, reduce production losses, and lower emissions from the hot rolling process.

Cleveland-Cliffs describes Butler Works as the sole U.S. producer of GOES, a material used in electrical transformers. The facility employs approximately 1,200 workers represented by United Auto Workers Local 3303, generates approximately $187 million in annual wages, and spends more than $200 million annually on local supplies and services. The project is expected to support approximately 220 construction jobs at peak activity.

Chairman and CEO Lourenco Goncalves said: "This investment demonstrates the importance of maintaining domestic manufacturing capabilities for materials that are essential to America's energy infrastructure."

During the visit, federal officials received an update on project progress and discussed the role of domestic GOES production in supporting the electric grid.
