BWXT's BANR microreactor selected for New Brunswick nuclear project

October 5, 2026 4:06 PM

BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) announced that Prodigy Clean Energy, Ltd., Pabineau First Nation and Eel River Bar First Nation have selected its BANR microreactor technology for a Transportable Nuclear Power Plant (TNPP) to be located in Belledune, New Brunswick.

The project, described as Indigenous-owned, would feature a TNPP capable of up to 50 megawatts electric within the traditional territory of the two First Nations. The Government of New Brunswick has signed a Letter of Intent to purchase electricity generated by the facility. The project targets in-service operation in the early 2030s.

The BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor, or BANR, is a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor designed to produce 75 megawatts thermal, or 22 megawatts electric, using high-assay low-enriched uranium in a TRISO fuel form. The design includes passive cooling and flexible power conversion options.

Prodigy's TNPP architecture is designed to package reactors for deployment over a multi-decade lifecycle. The modular plant can integrate one or multiple BANR reactors, is intended to be factory-built and shipped, and installation is targeted at approximately 18 months.

BWXT Canada Ltd. and Kinectrics Inc., a BWXT-owned company, will provide workforce and engineering support for the project. The two BANR units and related systems are planned to be fabricated primarily at BWXT's facilities in Ontario.

BWXT and Prodigy are working toward a definitive agreement covering project development, engineering, licensing, supply chain integration, financing and deployment. A final agreement has not yet been reached.
