Telus and AST SpaceMobile complete first network integration test

October 5, 2026 9:04 AM

Telus and AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTS) have completed their first integration test between Telus' wireless network and AST SpaceMobile's space-based satellite network, according to a joint statement from the companies.

The test focused on the ability to access broadband data services, make voice calls, and send text messages directly between smartphones and satellites. The companies said the service is expected to be available to Telus (TSX: T, NYSE: TU) customers within the next year.

The planned service would allow customers to use existing smartphones to connect beyond the reach of traditional cell towers, without requiring additional equipment. Coverage areas would include remote regions, highways, national parks, and northern communities across Canada.

"Connecting smartphones directly to satellites is opening up new possibilities for how Canadians stay connected," said Nazim Benhadid, Executive Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer at Telus. "This successful milestone with AST SpaceMobile is a major step forward in extending cellular coverage to places where service isn't available today."

AST SpaceMobile's network uses satellite arrays deployed in Low Earth Orbit. Chris Ivory, Chief Commercial Officer at AST SpaceMobile, said the milestone "reflects the strength and maturity of our technology" and that the partnership aims to build "a new layer of connectivity that enhances network reach and resilience."

The satellite service is intended to complement Telus' existing wireless infrastructure, including its 5G and LTE networks.
