S&P Global Ratings launches vault risk assessment tool
S&P Global Ratings, a division of S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI), launched a Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework on Oct. 4, 2026, designed to evaluate risks associated with digital asset lending vaults, which are blockchain-based investment vehicles that pool investor deposits and deploy them through defined strategies.
The VRA provides a forward-looking opinion on the overall relative risk of impairment to an investor's position in a lending vault. It covers six risk factors: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk. The VRA is not a credit rating and does not address yield levels.
Total deposits in digital asset lending vaults reached $10 billion as of September 2026, up from $1.5 billion in September 2024, according to the company's press release.
"As digital assets continue to institutionalize, the demand for independent risk assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralized innovation is paramount," said Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings.

James Wiemken, Executive Managing Director and Head of Global Ratings Services, noted that "varying disclosure standards in this nascent market create a clear need for a standardized, independent risk perspective."
S&P Global Ratings said it will publish initial Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements.
The launch follows other digital asset initiatives by S&P Global, including an agreement announced in September 2026 to acquire OpenZeppelin, a security platform for onchain finance, and a strategic investment in Kaiko, a digital asset market data provider. The company has also previously issued stablecoin stability assessments, a credit rating for the Sky Protocol DeFi platform, and a structured finance rating for a bitcoin-backed transaction called "Ledn."
