Medtronic wins Category I CPT codes for two devices, effective 2028
Medtronic plc (NYSE: MDT) announced that the American Medical Association (AMA) has approved new Category I Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for two of its medical devices. The new codes are effective January 2028, replacing existing Category III codes.
The approvals cover the Altaviva implantable tibial neuromodulation device, which received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance in September 2025 for the treatment of urge urinary incontinence, and the Symplicity Spyral renal denervation system, which received Medicare coverage finalization in October 2025 for the treatment of uncontrolled hypertension.
Category I CPT codes are permanent codes assigned to procedures the AMA has determined are well established, widely performed by physicians across the United States, and supported by clinical evidence. The codes can help support physician payment and inform commercial payer coverage decisions, but do not determine coverage, reimbursement, or patient access.

"The decision by AMA represents meaningful progress in the reimbursement pathway for these technologies," said Lindsay Bockstedt, vice president of health economics, policy, and reimbursement at Medtronic.
The Altaviva device is placed under the skin near the ankle in a minimally invasive procedure and delivers stimulation to the tibial nerve. It does not require imaging for implantation, uses only local anesthesia, and can be activated the same day as the procedure. The Symplicity Spyral system delivers radiofrequency energy via catheter to nerves near the kidneys and leaves no implant behind.
According to a company press release, Medtronic's renal denervation clinical program has studied the procedure in more than 5,000 patients and is backed by experience in over 40,000 patients globally.
