Citi says Gemini 4 launch removes “key overhang” from Google shares
Investing.com - Alphabet's new Gemini 4 Argon model ranks first across 14 of 19 benchmarks against frontier rivals from OpenAI and Anthropic, according to Citi analyst Ronald Josey, who framed the release as a turning point for investor sentiment.
"With the launch of Gemini 4 Argon after the close and given its SOTA capabilities across coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and relatively attractive pricing, we believe it removes a key overhang on shares of GOOGL," Josey wrote.
The analyst's call makes Alphabet — the parent of Google Cloud, Google Search, and Workspace — the primary publicly traded beneficiary of the Gemini 4 Argon launch, with each of those revenue lines now linked to what Citi characterizes as a refreshed AI product cycle.
In benchmark comparisons against GPT6-Astra from OpenAI and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5, Argon claimed the top position on 14 of the 19 tests evaluated by Citi. Josey noted that the model was built with misalignment mitigations, an increasingly important feature in enterprise and government procurement decisions.
There is one near-term caveat: Argon is not yet broadly available, currently sitting inside Google's Fairwind Program, and Citi flagged potential capacity limitations as a risk to watch as demand scales.
The speed of the launch itself carries signal for Citi. "Argon underscore's management's commitment to building SOTA FMs and with the (earlier than expected) launch it should lead to greater product velocity and model cadence going forward," Josey wrote.
That characterization matters for GOOGL shareholders who have watched OpenAI and Anthropic set the release pace for the past two years. An earlier-than-expected delivery from Google shifts the narrative on execution.
Looking across Alphabet's business lines, Citi sees the launch as the trigger for a broad re-acceleration. "We expect Argon to accelerate Google's product cadence across Cloud, Workspace, Search, and developer tools marking the (re)start of Google's product cycle (including its Personal Agent Spark), though we're watching for capacity limitations," Josey said.
Google Cloud in particular stands to benefit from enterprise customers evaluating frontier model access, while Search monetization could gain from deeper AI integration and Workspace from productivity-focused deployments.
For investors seeking a direct equity angle on the competitive AI model race, GOOGL is the single clearest expression of that theme among mega-cap names, given its simultaneous exposure to model development, cloud infrastructure, and consumer-facing AI products across Search and Workspace.
Citi's $447 price target implies almost 30% upside from current trading levels.
