OpenAI and Synopsys partner to develop chip design AI model

September 30, 2026 2:30 PM

OpenAI and Synopsys (NASDAQ: SNPS) announced a multi-year strategic partnership to jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized AI model designed to perform semiconductor design workflows using Synopsys electronic design automation (EDA) tools.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will license Synopsys' EDA tools for development of the model. The two companies will collaborate on research and development and joint go-to-market initiatives under a shared revenue framework, making GPT-Synopsys available to customers worldwide.

GPT-Synopsys is designed to operate Synopsys' tools directly, reason about chip design and verification, and iterate toward verified outcomes. Engineers would delegate design objectives — including power, performance, and area optimization, timing, and verification — with AI agents running the tools, interpreting results, and implementing changes for engineer review.

The model will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and is designed to integrate with the Synopsys.ai platform and the Synopsys Autopilot agentic AI platform. The companies said early technology engagements are underway with semiconductor customers.

The joint offering will bundle compute, the model, and licenses. Customer design data will not be used to train the model, will be encrypted at rest and in transit, and can be managed through configurable retention, audit, and permission controls.

"This agreement will expand access to Synopsys' advanced design capabilities and the underlying, ground-truth engineering tools required to bring increasingly complex chips to market," said Sassine Ghazi, president and CEO of Synopsys.

Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, said the collaboration aims to help engineers "explore more designs and get to a working chip faster."
