Mattel shares fall as board names Roger Lynch CEO to succeed Ynon Kreiz
Investing.com -- Mattel Inc (NASDAQ: MAT) shares fell 3% in premarket trading on Wednesday following the announcement that Chief Executive Officer Ynon Kreiz will step down to take a senior leadership role at another public company. The toy manufacturer appointed long-time board member and Independent Lead Director Roger Lynch as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer to steer the company through its next phase of growth.
Lynch, who currently serves as CEO of global media company Condé Nast, will assume the Chairman role on October 2, 2026, and take over executive leadership on or before November 2, 2026. The executive transition follows a comprehensive succession planning process led by board member Judy Olian, while current director Diana Ferguson has been named the new Independent Lead Director.
The leadership change marks the end of Kreiz’s eight-year tenure, during which he spearheaded a multi-year turnaround that reshaped Mattel from a traditional toy manufacturer into an IP-driven entertainment company. Under his direction, the company fortified its core toy categories, regained key entertainment licenses such as Disney Princess, and produced the blockbuster Barbie film, which generated historic global box office returns in 2023.
Lynch brings extensive experience at the intersection of media, technology, and consumer brands, having previously served as CEO of Pandora and founding CEO of Sling TV. His background in digital monetization and intellectual property expansion aligns directly with Mattel's ongoing efforts to scale its digital gaming ecosystem, including its full ownership of mobile developer Mattel163, and expand its film and television slate.
While the unexpected executive departure prompted immediate selling pressure in premarket trading, the company enters the transition with a significantly strengthened balance sheet and an investment-grade credit profile. Investors will likely focus on Lynch’s execution as he balances Mattel’s traditional retail footprint with its capital-intensive push into multi-platform media entertainment.
