Commvault adds AI agent data protection for managed laptops
Commvault (NASDAQ: CVLT) announced it is enabling IT and security teams to discover, protect, and recover agent configurations and AI data from select agentic AI tools running on managed Windows and macOS devices.
The capability covers Claude Cowork and Claude Code, both by Anthropic, and OpenClaw. It is designed to address data loss scenarios in which employees lose laptop access due to device damage, theft, or replacement, potentially losing AI agent configurations, prompt libraries, custom instructions, and accumulated workflow context stored locally on those devices.
The feature also provides security teams with a centralized view of supported AI tools installed across managed employee devices, giving organizations visibility into instances where AI tools may have been installed outside approved IT processes, a scenario commonly referred to as shadow AI.

According to IBM data cited in the press release, 80% of surveyed U.S. office workers reported using AI in their roles, while only 22% relied exclusively on employer-provided AI tools.
"Most organizations cannot tell you which AI agents are running on their employees' machines, let alone recover the work inside them," said Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault. "We give IT and Security visibility into where these AI tools are installed, and a recovery path for the context employees have built inside them."
Discovery of OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app is available immediately. Discovery, protection, and recovery for Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and OpenClaw will be generally available in the coming months. The capabilities will be accessible through Commvault's existing endpoint protection offerings at no additional cost. The offering is part of Commvault's AgentRecover solution.
