Lyft app expands to Europe for North American riders
Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT) has launched its app in Europe, allowing North American riders to use their existing accounts, payment methods, and app when traveling abroad, according to a company press release.
The rollout began in Barcelona and Hamburg, with additional cities including London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens, and Warsaw set to become available throughout October. By the end of October, the app is expected to be active across Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, France, and Germany.
The expansion is built on a new backend framework that connects the Lyft rider app to a third-party marketplace, giving users access to local driver supply in each market. Lyft said the technology was designed to allow future integration of additional third-party marketplaces in other countries.

"Millions of riders across North America trust Lyft to get them where they're going every day. Now that same app works the moment they land in Europe. No need to download anything new," said Sid Patil, Lyft's Chief Rideshare and Marketplace Officer.
Riders will initially be charged using their existing North American payment methods. Lyft said it plans to offer the option to pay in local currency within the next year.
European riders will continue using the Freenow by Lyft and Gett by Lyft apps. Lyft said drivers on those platforms may see increased demand as North American travelers begin using the Lyft app in Europe.
