Apple to unveil smart-home hub on Oct. 13 in major AI push - Bloomberg
Investing.com -- Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is preparing to finally make its long-delayed leap into the smart-home market. The tech giant is planning to unveil a new smart display hub on Oct. 13, according to a recent Bloomberg News report. The launch marks the first major hardware expansion under the leadership of John Ternus, who officially took over as CEO on Sept. 1.
The upcoming smart-home hub, internally code-named J490, will serve as the centerpiece of Apple’s renewed strategy to capture the living room. Alongside the flagship display, Apple plans to announce the first refresh of the HomePod mini since its 2020 debut, as well as its first new Apple TV set-top box since 2022.
This hardware rollout will serve as a critical early test for Ternus. While Apple has long viewed the connected home as a highly valuable ecosystem, it has historically lagged behind industry leaders like Amazon and Google in the smart display category.
At the core of this new product lineup is Apple’s next-generation Siri AI assistant. After facing a string of developmental delays, the revamped Siri is ready for the spotlight. These new devices will serve as the physical vessel for Apple’s broader artificial intelligence ambitions, bringing the company’s multi-year AI development into users’ homes.
The J490 home hub will reportedly feature a roughly 6-inch square display. Designed for versatility, it will be offered in versions meant to sit on a countertop stand or attach to a wall mount.
While the physical design of the device has been previously rumored, fascinating new information is emerging about how the hub will actually operate. According to Bloomberg, the device’s defining feature will be its ability to seamlessly serve multiple members of a household. Designed with built-in facial and voice recognition, the hub will automatically identify who is speaking to it or approaching the screen.
When a recognized user walks up, the device will instantly display their personalized contacts, messages, calendar appointments, notes, and preferred app layout. Furthermore, the interface is designed to dynamically shift on the fly; if another recognized household member approaches, the on-screen content will automatically change to match their specific profile and accounts. To ensure privacy when company is over, the hub will also include a dedicated "visitor mode" that hides all personal information from view.
Meanwhile, the updated HomePod mini and Apple TV will maintain their familiar external designs but will be supercharged under the hood. Both devices will feature significantly faster processors built specifically to support the heavy computational demands of Siri’s new on-device AI models.
