NetApp adds AI data engine features and expands Commvault tie-up

September 29, 2026 1:34 PM

NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) announced updates to its platform aimed at supporting enterprise AI deployments, including an expanded metadata discovery capability within its AI Data Engine and a deeper integration with Commvault for ransomware recovery.

The AI Data Engine (AIDE) update extends metadata discovery across NetApp's own storage products — including ONTAP and StorageGRID — as well as non-NetApp storage systems. The capability covers NFS, SMB, and S3 repositories, allowing organizations to locate and catalog data without copying or moving it. NetApp said it is also previewing future AIDE features, including AI-powered data analysis tools and integrations with analytics platforms Starburst and Onehouse.AI.

The expanded Commvault integration connects NetApp's ransomware detection signals on primary storage to Commvault's recovery workflows. According to the companies, the joint solution is intended to allow customers to recover data in minutes rather than days or weeks. The workflow includes threat detection, cleanroom validation in an isolated environment, and recovery management from the Commvault console.

"By integrating NetApp's ransomware detection and immutable data protection with Commvault's clean recovery capabilities, we help customers accelerate response, restore trusted data with confidence, and reduce mean time to clean recover," said Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault.

Asad Khan, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AI at NetApp, said the company's approach focuses on activating data where it already resides rather than through pipelines that copy and move data before use.

NetApp noted that statements regarding unreleased features are subject to change and should not be relied upon for purchasing decisions.
