Calix and Astound complete trial of 50G-PON network technology
Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) announced that Astound has completed a trial of Calix's 50G-PON passive optical network access solution, according to a press release from Calix.
The trial demonstrated that 50G-PON, which supports 50 gigabits per second of downstream speeds and flexible upstream speeds, can operate alongside Astound's existing XGS-PON infrastructure. Astound used the same AXOS-powered operational model and back-office integrations currently supporting its network, without requiring a network overhaul.
The trial validated that Astound could deploy higher-capacity services for residential, commercial, wholesale, and multi-tenant markets using the Calix One platform. The companies have collaborated for more than a decade.

Lamar Horton, SVP of engineering at Astound, said: "This successful trial gives us confidence that the Calix 50G-PON solution can drive new revenue streams without incremental network or operational complexity. We now have a practical path to quickly act on emerging opportunities, deliver differentiated subscriber experiences, and win across increasingly competitive markets."
Shane Eleniak, chief product officer at Calix, said: "Astound's trial demonstrates how service providers can evolve to 50G-PON without disrupting how they operate today."
Calix states that more than 1,200 customers use the Calix One platform, which the company says has been developed over 15 years at an investment of more than $2 billion.
