Lexicon Pharmaceuticals surges as Cantor Fitzgerald sees unencumbered path in HCM
Investing.com -- Shares of Lexicon Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: LXRX) rallied over 13% in Monday morning trading following a bullish initiation of coverage from Wall Street research firm Cantor Fitzgerald. The broker set an Overweight rating and an $8.00 price target on the biopharmaceutical company, reflecting substantial upside potential driven by the company’s ongoing late-stage cardiovascular research program.
Seedhouse expressed confidence in the mechanics of the trial, suggesting that broad precedent data and a strong mechanistic rationale point toward a successful outcome. Although commercialization of sotagliflozin, originally approved for heart failure under the brand name Inpefa, was previously deprioritized by the company, its pivot to HCM represents a potentially lucrative strategic shift.
Crucially, the firm emphasized that sotagliflozin operates through a mechanism completely orthogonal to cardiac myosin inhibitors (CMIs), the current mainstay of recent innovation in HCM treatment. Because background CMI therapy is permitted within the SONATA-HCM trial protocol, sotagliflozin is positioned to complement existing treatment regimens rather than compete directly against them.
Should the Phase 3 trial achieve its endpoints, Cantor Fitzgerald believes sotagliflozin will emerge "essentially unencumbered" competitively within an established multibillion-dollar treatment landscape. Against that backdrop, the $8.00 price target underscores an expectation of significant valuation expansion as the market increasingly prices in the asset's clinical probability of success ahead of early 2027.
