Planet Labs launches Amazon.ia biodiversity initiative with 27 partners
Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) has launched Amazon.ia - Inteligencia Ambiental, a multi-partner initiative that combines satellite imagery, ground-collected data, and artificial intelligence to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem health across the Amazon region.
The Bezos Earth Fund has granted more than $14 million across the Andes Amazon Fund and the World Resources Institute to support the initiative, which counts more than two dozen organizations as partners, including Microsoft, MIT, Cornell University, the Smithsonian, WWF, and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
According to a press release, Amazon.ia is designed to deliver biodiversity data to scientists, conservation organizations, governments, and local communities. The system aims to produce change alerts, biodiversity status reports, assessments of protected area effectiveness, and evidence of ecosystem recovery.

"Amazon.ia brings together leading partners and technologies to build something that does not exist today: a more complete, dynamic understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem health across the Amazon," said Dr. Cristián Samper, Managing Director and Leader for Nature Solutions at the Bezos Earth Fund.
Andrew Zolli, Chief Impact Officer at Planet, described the initiative as an opportunity to train AI on satellite imagery and analytics to create biodiversity tools, adding that the program advances what he called "Planetary Intelligence."
The initiative is developing data infrastructure and analytical capabilities co-designed with local communities and decision-makers across the Amazon basin.
