MSA Safety launches new G1 City Edition breathing apparatus
MSA Safety Incorporated (NYSE: MSA) launched the G1 City Edition self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) on Sept. 23, 2026, adding integrated beacon technology and a lighter design to its existing G1 platform.
The new unit incorporates LUNAR Beacon Technology directly into the SCBA power module, allowing a LUNAR Connected Device to locate firefighters in distress during search-and-rescue operations. The LUNAR device uses a proprietary network called FAST (Firefighter Assist Search Technology) to provide directional information toward a firefighter in an alarm condition. The system can also display SCBA air-pressure data and transmit alarm status through MSA's FireGrid Monitor application when data or radio connectivity is available.
The G1 City Edition SCBA weighs up to a half-pound less than the previous G1 model in standard configuration. A newly engineered cylinder retention system delivers more than a 10% weight reduction compared with the standard G1 retention band. The unit ships with a low-profile swiveling lumbar pad that replaces a traditional adjustable swivel lumbar configuration.
Design changes informed by firefighter feedback include thicker regulator and cylinder-valve controls for gloved operation, redesigned shoulder pads, longer pull straps, one-handed facepiece donning capability, and a control module that continuously displays cylinder pressure and estimated air time remaining.

The apparatus meets the 2025 edition of NFPA 1970 (1981 and 1982), the performance standard for structural and proximity firefighting.
"Firefighters tell us that accountability and the ability to locate personnel quickly during emergency situations are among their highest priorities," said Steve Blanco, MSA Safety President and Chief Executive Officer.
MSA Safety, headquartered in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, reported 2025 revenues of $1.9 billion and employs more than 5,300 people across more than 40 international locations. The G1 City Edition SCBA is produced at the company's facility in Murrysville, Pennsylvania.
