Four companies sign MoU to deploy BWRX-300 reactors in Europe and UK
SGE, GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV), Hitachi, and Samsung C&T have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on deploying the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Central and Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom.
The MoU was signed in New York during the Atlantic Council Nuclear Energy Policy Summit, held alongside the United Nations General Assembly. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Masayoshi Arai, Vice-Minister for International Affairs at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, were present at the signing.
The agreement is tied to a broader Memorandum of Cooperation on SMR deployment signed at this year's NATO summit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japan Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu, and Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Hyun. The U.S. Department of State identified the four-company initiative as a concrete industry effort to advance BWRX-300 deployment across Europe.

Under the MoU, the companies will assess market opportunities, develop deployment strategies, and pursue commercial opportunities for the BWRX-300. GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, a joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi, is the technology provider for the reactor. Samsung C&T will contribute engineering and construction capabilities, while SGE will serve as the exclusive regional lead for the BWRX-300 across much of Central and Eastern Europe.
The BWRX-300 is a 300 MW reactor with its first unit currently under construction in Canada. In Poland, Decisions in Principle have been issued for 26 BWRX-300 reactors, with development focused on three sites for the first 14 units. In the United Kingdom, SGE is advancing a 4.2 GW fleet of 14 reactors across three sites, with its proposal progressing through a Preliminary Regulatory Assessment Deep Dive led by Great British Energy – Nuclear.
