CNX adds radiation monitoring to Pennsylvania environmental program
CNX Resources Corporation (NYSE: CNX) announced it will add continuous ambient gamma radiation monitoring at its unconventional well pads and certain produced water facilities in Pennsylvania, expanding an existing public-private environmental monitoring program it operates with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The expansion, announced Sept. 17, builds on a collaboration that began in November 2023 when CNX and Governor Josh Shapiro signed a Statement of Mutual Interest. That program originally covered air and water quality data and drilling chemical disclosure on a continuous basis. The addition of radiation monitoring represents the latest expansion of the initiative.
Under the updated program, CNX will install continuous gamma radiation monitors covering all phases of well pad development, from drilling through production. Raw data will be collected by Onterris, formerly Montrose Environmental Group, an accredited third-party environmental services provider, and shared simultaneously with DEP and the public through CNX's online transparency platform.
CNX will also expand public disclosure of radiation surveys conducted on waste leaving its operating sites. The company says it already surveys waste before disposal; it will now publish that daily survey data monthly. The company also conducts semiannual desktop reviews and annual on-site inspections of every waste handling facility approved to receive its waste.

"Just as we've done with air and water quality, we're going to put actual, site-level radiation data in front of the public and DEP rather than allow questionable studies and speculation to drive the narrative on this important issue," said Alan Shepard, President and CEO of CNX.
CNX described the commitments as voluntary and said they go beyond existing obligations under state and federal law. The company noted that Clean Air Engineering handles air quality monitoring under the existing program, while Onterris will take on the radiation monitoring role.
The earlier collaboration also helped inform DEP rulemaking requiring broader chemical disclosure across the natural gas industry. As of December 31, 2025, CNX held 9.7 trillion cubic feet equivalent of proved natural gas reserves.
