Meta Oversight Board orders removal of AI deepfakes, urges policy changes

September 17, 2026 6:10 AM

Meta Platforms' (NASDAQ: META) Oversight Board has ordered the company to remove AI-generated deepfake content targeting women, including deepfake videos of a U.K. local politician flagged for hate speech and an AI-generated video of a female campaigner, according to a statement released Sept. 17, 2026.

The board issued nine policy recommendations, stating that Meta's existing safeguards have been "consistently inadequate" to address the rise of AI-generated content on its platforms.

Among the recommendations, the board urged Meta to implement automated deepfake removal, strengthen AI content labeling, and prioritize human review of deepfake harassment reports using AI signals. The board also recommended that Meta demonetize, demote, or remove high-risk AI content from user recommendations, with escalating penalties for repeat-offender accounts.

Additional recommendations include expanding Meta's "unwanted manipulated imagery" policy to cover deepfakes of private individuals, publishing annual data in its transparency center on the number of times it applies AI labels to content, and ensuring that policies prohibiting voting and census interference are applied globally rather than being limited to the U.S.
