Investing.com -- President Donald Trump said Friday he would stop trading with countries that run trade surpluses with the United States unless the Federal Reserve lowers interest rates.

In a social media post, Trump stated that high interest rates place the country at an unfair disadvantage. "High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won't allow that to happen!," he wrote.

The president referenced the August jobs report, which showed employers added 162,000 jobs during the month. He argued that the stronger economy warrants lower borrowing costs.

Trump said the United States should have the lowest interest rate of any country in the world. He claimed the Supreme Court acknowledged in a recent tariff decision that the president has the authority to stop trading with deficit countries.

The president has repeatedly called on the Fed to reduce rates during his second term. Multiple Fed officials have recently indicated the possibility of raising rates in the near term to address inflation.
