Bausch + Lomb Corporation (NYSE: BLCO) announced the publication of a multicenter retrospective case series examining real-world outcomes with its enVista Aspire and enVista Aspire toric intraocular lenses (IOLs). The study appeared in the journal Ophthalmology and Therapy.

The study involved six U.S.-based cataract surgeons and included 84 patients and 141 eyes — 88 implanted with enVista Aspire and 53 with enVista Aspire toric. Surgeons completed a retrospective experience survey capturing visual acuity, refractive outcomes, and safety data.

In the enVista Aspire group, 97.2% of patients achieved a monocular corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 20/25 or better, 71.3% achieved uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/25 or better, and 76.6% achieved uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) of 20/32 or better at the last reported follow-up.

In the enVista Aspire toric group, 94.9% reached a monocular CDVA of 20/25 or better, 84.9% reached a monocular UDVA of 20/25 or better, and 93% reached a monocular UIVA of 20/32 or better. Across both groups, 100% of subjects achieved a binocular UIVA of 20/32 or better. No serious adverse events were recorded.

Lead author Eric Donnenfeld, MD, an ophthalmologist with Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut, said in a statement: "The outcomes reported in this study not only mirror what I've seen in my practice, they also provide evidence that the intermediate optimized optic is indeed having the intended affect in clinical practice."

According to the press release, enVista Aspire uses a modification of the posterior aspheric surface to create a slight broadening of depth of focus beyond standard monofocal IOLs. The toric version is designed to also address corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery.
