Sonos launches OS 27 with AI control and two new products

September 1, 2026 10:41 AM

Sonos (Nasdaq: SONO) introduced Sonos 27, the latest version of its audio operating system, along with two new hardware products: Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra.

Sonos 27 includes AI voice control through a proprietary assistant called Sonos 27voice, and a new feature called Sonos 27mcp that allows third-party AI assistants, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, to connect to the system. The company also previewed Sonos Custom Agents, a forthcoming capability that will allow users to build their own AI agents within the system.

Atty Eleti, product lead for ChatGPT Voice at OpenAI, said in a statement: "With this Sonos integration, people can ask ChatGPT to play music anywhere in their home from their phone or computer, without leaving the conversation they're having."

The update also introduces Sonos Fabric, described as a system capability that enables devices to sense each other and adapt. Two features built on it include headphone linking, which connects Sonos Ace Ultra to nearby speakers, and Sonos Positioning Technology, which detects a speaker's physical location and adjusts its role in the system. The latter enables a portable surrounds feature for Move 2 and Sonos Play owners.

Beam Ultra is a mid-size soundbar with 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos support. Sonos Ace Ultra is a headphone designed for deeper integration with the Sonos system.

Sonos 27 will be delivered as a software update to existing Sonos S2 products, with new app navigation and Sonos 27mcp in Early Access beginning Sept. 8. Portable surrounds also become available Sept. 8. Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra are available for pre-order now at sonos.com and select retailers, with general availability set for Sept. 29.

Tom Conrad, CEO of Sonos, said: "Sonos 27 takes that further, bringing acoustic engineering, adaptable software, intelligence and design together in a way only Sonos can."
