USANA CEO Kevin Guest Calls on People to Find a Way to Serve Others, Then Act
The invitation reflects what Guest calls The Holland Principle in his book, All The Right Reasons: 12 Timeless Principles for Living a Life in Harmony: "Find opportunities to serve, then act."
"No matter how unexceptional we think we are, each of us has a great capacity to help others, to make someone's life better," said Guest.
Guest developed the principle during volunteer missionary service in
That lesson has stayed with him throughout his life and leadership career: good intentions matter only when they lead to action.
"You don't have to leave town to serve people," he said. "Countless needs are everywhere. How many people just need a friend, someone to talk to or sit with, someone to say hello and care about them?"
In his bestseller, Guest recalled meeting with a woman struggling in her marriage. As she talked for an hour, he listened without interrupting. Later, her husband thanked Guest for helping. Guest told him, "I think you need to listen more."
"Sometimes servant leadership is giving someone a listening ear without judging them," Guest said. "I've found it's better to listen more than you talk."
Guest offers three ways to put The Holland Principle into action:

3. Make service a habit. Guest and his family made a
Guest has also seen the principle applied through USANA. Traveling with USANA founder Dr.
But Guest stresses that meaningful service should not be measured by money, scale or recognition.
"Those of us with plenty have the highest obligation to serve and help those who are less fortunate," he said. "You can make the world a better place and change your own life in the process."
Guest's invitation comes down to three actions: look around, find the need, do something.
