Medtronic invests $700M in Cornerstone Robotics partnership

September 1, 2026 6:40 AM

Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced a partnership with Cornerstone Robotics that includes an approximately $700 million investment, granting Medtronic rights to distribute Cornerstone's Sentire surgical system in select markets outside the U.S. where the system has received market approval.

The Sentire system received CE Mark in May 2026 for use in minimally invasive general, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic surgical procedures. It also holds market approval in China and Singapore. Medtronic plans to distribute Sentire alongside its existing Hugo robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system.

The Hugo RAS system is currently in use in more than 35 countries across six continents, including the U.S., where it received FDA clearance within the last year. Medtronic said procedure growth for the Hugo system is running at more than twice the rate of the broader robotic surgery market, with total procedures expected to exceed 50,000 globally by the end of the company's fiscal year.

"Surgeons, health systems and markets have varying needs and preferences, which is why we are investing across robotic platforms, digital tools and platform-enhancing technologies," said Matt Anderson, senior vice president and president of Surgical at Medtronic.

Samuel Au, founder and CEO of Cornerstone Robotics, said the company has been "steadfast in our commitment to innovation, excellence and clinical value" since its founding.

Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC served as exclusive financial advisor to Medtronic, with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP acting as lead legal counsel. Kirkland & Ellis and Global Law Office are acting as legal counsel to Cornerstone Robotics.

Cornerstone Robotics operates three global research and development hubs and six business centers, with a manufacturing facility in China. The information in this article is based on a press release issued by Medtronic.
