Abbott (NYSE: ABT) has launched Similac 360 Total Care Made With Whole Milk, which the company claims is the first commercially sterile, ready-to-feed liquid infant formula made with whole milk available in the United States.

The product is available in 8 fl oz and 32 fl oz sizes and is priced at a per-feeding cost similar to Abbott's existing Similac 360 Total Care powdered infant formulas. Liquid infant formulas typically carry a higher price than powdered alternatives.

The formula contains whole milk and a blend of five human milk oligosaccharides, which are prebiotics. Abbott states the product does not contain corn syrup, palm olein oil, or artificial growth hormones, and that its ingredients are non-GMO.

The product launched at Target and Amazon, with availability planned to expand to Walmart and additional retail, club, grocery, and pharmacy locations in the coming weeks. Abbott said each batch will be manufactured at its own U.S. facility.

Abbott noted that the original Similac 360 Total Care liquid formula will remain available in 2 fl oz and 8 fl oz sizes, and that existing powdered Similac 360 Total Care formulas are not being discontinued.

According to the company's press release, both the FDA and CDC advise that parents of infants under two months of age and those with weakened immune systems consider using commercially sterile liquid formula when not feeding breast milk.
