GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) has been selected by Laing O'Rourke to deliver a 400 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation in Chesterfield, England, as part of National Grid's Brinsworth to Chesterfield and Chesterfield to High Marnham projects.

The substation is part of the Great Grid Upgrade, a large-scale overhaul of the electricity grid across England and Wales. The work falls within broader network upgrades spanning Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

GE Vernova's scope includes design engineering, procurement, equipment delivery, site installation, testing, commissioning, protection and control systems, interface management, integration with the existing transmission network, and decommissioning of existing equipment.

The project is planned to use GE Vernova's SF₆-free g³ GIS technology, which the company describes as an alternative to sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) while maintaining equivalent performance, safety and reliability standards.
