AWS and Nvidia plan to deploy 2 million more GPUs in 2027-2028
Amazon Web Services (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced an expansion of their strategic collaboration, including plans to deploy 2 million additional Nvidia GPUs across AWS's global infrastructure in 2027 and 2028.
According to a joint press release, the additional capacity will include Nvidia Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra GPUs. The announcement follows a prior commitment made at Nvidia GTC 2026, when AWS said it would add more than 1 million Nvidia GPUs starting in 2026, a target the companies say has since been outpaced by demand.
As part of the expanded collaboration, the two companies said they plan to bring Nvidia Vera CPU-based infrastructure to AWS, extend Nvidia NVLink Fusion with custom high-bandwidth memory, and build AI factories for the U.S. government. Those government plans include deploying 100,000 GPUs on AWS's secure infrastructure for federal and national-security workloads classified at Impact Level 6 and above.
AWS will also expand its Nvidia Blackwell capacity with RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs for Amazon EC2 G7 instances. The companies claim G7 instances deliver 4.6x AI inference performance and 2.1x graphics performance compared to the previous-generation G6 instances.
On the software and data side, the companies said GPU-accelerated data processing on Amazon EMR using Nvidia's cuDF library delivers up to 3.7x faster processing and 30% better price performance versus CPU-based configurations. GPU-accelerated vector indexing on Amazon OpenSearch Service is said to offer up to 9x faster indexing at one-quarter of the cost.
Amazon Robotics is also collaborating with Nvidia to integrate Nvidia's physical AI platform, including the Jetson platform, Omniverse libraries, and the Isaac robotics development platform, for use in warehouse automation and robot development.
"Demand is running ahead of every forecast," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, said the expanded collaboration gives customers "even more ways to build and deploy AI on AWS."
