U.S. Army selects BWXT nuclear reactor for Fort Campbell deployment
BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) has been selected to deploy its BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor (BANR) technology under the U.S. Army's Janus program, a nuclear energy initiative developed in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). The first BANR unit is slated for deployment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
The Janus program, which launched in October 2025, aims to deliver nuclear energy to military installations. According to the Army, five vendors were down-selected to own, construct, and operate nuclear microreactors at several military sites.
The BANR is a high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor using TRISO fuel. For the Janus program, a 20-megawatt electric version will be deployed. The reactor has a footprint of less than five acres per unit, a four-year refueling cycle, and produces 75 megawatts of thermal energy. It can operate as a standalone electricity source or as a cogeneration system providing both electricity and process heat.
BWXT plans to execute the program in phases. The first phase includes finalizing site selection within Fort Campbell, initiating nuclear regulatory processes, and beginning TRISO fuel fabrication at existing BWXT facilities. The company is targeting a groundbreaking for site construction in late 2028, with reactor operations expected to begin in the early 2030s.

Rex D. Geveden, BWXT's president and chief executive officer, said the company is "delivering the nation's most credible and reliable path to deployable nuclear power."
Separately, BWXT noted that Tata Chemicals Soda Ash LLC has signed a letter of intent to explore deploying up to eight BANR units in Wyoming.
