Waystar unveils AI agents to automate healthcare billing tasks

August 26, 2026 11:22 AM

Waystar (Nasdaq: WAY) announced a set of AI-powered features under its AltitudeAI platform designed to automate tasks across healthcare revenue cycle workflows, according to a company press release.

The new capabilities include autonomous claim resubmission, which the company claims is an industry first. The feature interprets payer responses, applies payer-specific data, and automatically resubmits eligible denied or rejected claims with minimal human involvement. Waystar noted that payers ultimately pay approximately 70% of initially denied claims, though often only after providers invest additional time in rework.

Waystar also introduced conversational AI embedded in its analytics tools, allowing users to query operational and financial data using natural language. Early adopters reported up to a 75% reduction in time spent on data analysis, though the company noted results may vary by organization and use case.

A third feature expands AI into clinical documentation workflows. Waystar said its agents can analyze approximately 30,000 data points within a medical record in seconds, synthesize clinical information, and organize supporting evidence for specialist review. The company expects the tool to reduce review time by approximately 25%.

The fourth addition is an AI-powered patient financial engagement tool designed to guide patients through their financial responsibility. Waystar cited more than $556 billion in annual out-of-pocket healthcare spending as context for the feature's development.

The announcements were made at the company's annual client conference, Waystar True North, where more than 600 attendees gathered to review new product developments. Waystar said its platform processes over 7.5 billion healthcare payment transactions annually and covers approximately 60% of U.S. patients.

Chief Executive Officer Matt Hawkins said in a statement: "By combining AI with the breadth of our data, payer intelligence, and connected workflows, Waystar increasingly identifies what needs attention and deploys specialized agents to pursue resolution."
