Sunshine Biopharma reports tumor suppression results with K1.1 mRNA program
Sunshine Biopharma Inc. (NASDAQ: SBFM) reported that its K1.1 mRNA lipid nanoparticle program demonstrated tumor-suppressing activity as a single agent in at least two orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma mouse models, according to a company statement.
The K1.1 mRNA targets a tumor suppressor gene that is frequently mutated in hepatocellular carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. The company said the therapy was successfully delivered systemically in vivo and was well tolerated, with results showing dose-dependent restoration of the target tumor suppressor in grafted liver tumors.
The company also reported in vitro evidence that K1.1 mRNA delivery produced antiproliferative effects in several NSCLC cell lines. The next phase of the program will combine K1.1 mRNA with a cancer vaccine targeting associated antigens in vivo for the treatment of NSCLC. The company said the dual therapy approach aims to convert immune-evasive "cold" tumors into immune-active "hot" tumors while simultaneously applying a cancer vaccine directed against oncogenes associated with K1.1 gene mutations.
"The next phase — pairing K1.1 mRNA with a cancer vaccine — positions us to pursue a differentiated therapeutic pathway in NSCLC," said Steve Slilaty, CEO of Sunshine Biopharma.
Sunshine Biopharma also markets 60 generic prescription drugs in Canada, with approximately 12 additional drugs scheduled to launch in the remainder of 2026. The company's proprietary pipeline includes the K1.1 mRNA program and a PLpro protease inhibitor for treatment of SARS coronavirus infections.
