Better Home & Finance board backs interim CEO amid founder dispute
The Special Committee of Better Home & Finance Holding Company (NASDAQ: BETR) issued a statement defending its decision to appoint Daniel Lewis as Interim Chief Executive Officer and opposing any return of founder Vishal Garg to an operating role at the company.
The committee said the leadership transition was supported by every board director except Garg, who has launched a campaign to remove a majority of the company's directors. The company filed a preliminary consent revocation statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on August 19, 2026, in opposition to that effort.
According to the statement, the company remains within its published guidance for the third quarter and expects to return to growth. The company also expects to exceed its previously announced $45 million in annualized cost reductions. A recently launched partnership is producing what the company described as its strongest initial locked loan volume of any partnership in its history, though the partner was not identified.
Better said it remains on track to launch its wholesale program through an upcoming product called TinmanGo, along with at least two additional enterprise partnerships. A sale process involving the company's U.K.-based bank is ongoing.
The Special Committee stated that Better's stock price declined by more than 90% during Garg's tenure as CEO, citing that figure as part of its argument against his return to an operating role.
The committee said it is unanimous in its view that Garg should have no continuing operating role at the company. A permanent CEO search is underway.
