BriaCell advances melanoma vaccine candidate to genetic engineering milestone
BriaCell Therapeutics Corp. (Nasdaq: BCTX, BCTXL; TSX: BCT) announced that its Bria-MEL+ melanoma immunotherapy vaccine candidate has reached a key genetic engineering milestone, according to a company statement.
Bria-MEL+ is a whole-cell cancer vaccine designed to activate immune responses against melanoma cells. The program uses premanufactured cell lines selected through patient HLA matching via a saliva test, which the company says removes the need for individualized manufacturing while still enabling patient-specific treatment selection.
"Bria-MEL+ is designed to combine the advantages of personalized immunotherapy with the accessibility of an off-the-shelf vaccine," said William V. Williams, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of BriaCell. "By eliminating individualized manufacturing, we believe this approach has the potential to broaden access, shorten treatment timelines, and reduce treatment costs while preserving patient-specific matching."
The program is derived from BriaCell's Bria-OTS+ cellular immunotherapy platform. BriaCell's pipeline also includes Bria-IMT, currently in a pivotal Phase 3 trial for metastatic breast cancer, and Bria-PROS+, which recently received FDA clearance to begin clinical evaluation in prostate cancer.
Earlier in 2026, BriaCell presented preclinical data on the Bria-OTS+ platform at the AACR Annual Meeting, showing activation of adaptive and innate immune components including T cells, dendritic cells, and natural killer cells.
The American Cancer Society estimates approximately 112,000 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2026, with around 8,510 expected deaths from the disease.
