GE Vernova unveils medium-voltage power supply for data centers
GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has announced a new medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (MV-UPS) aimed at data centers, AI facilities, and other energy-intensive operations, according to a company statement.
The MV-UPS is designed to provide power protection at the medium-voltage level, rather than the low-voltage stage where such protection is typically applied today. By positioning the system between a facility's power supply and its critical loads, GE Vernova says the solution allows a single coordinated system to protect larger portions of a facility while reducing the impact of sudden demand changes on the grid or onsite generation sources.
The system combines power-conversion technology, advanced controls, and integrated energy storage to maintain stable voltage and frequency. GE Vernova says the approach is also intended to help customers meet power-quality and grid-connection requirements and simplify downstream electrical infrastructure.
"Reliable, uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising that requirement to a new level of scale and complexity," said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification segment.
GE Vernova expects to begin shipping MV-UPS systems in mid-2027, with the first project energization targeted for late 2027.
The company said the MV-UPS expands its existing data center product portfolio, which currently includes gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear, energy management systems, and power-conversion technologies. GE Vernova also noted it is separately developing solid-state transformer technology intended to support power conversion closer to the computing rack.
