GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) has been selected by Quinbrook to supply technology for the third stage of the Supernode Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Queensland, Australia, according to a press release.

With the contract, GE Vernova will provide power conversion, plant controls, system integration and grid-connection support across all three stages of the Supernode development. Stages 1 and 2, which also use GE Vernova technology, are already operational.

Stage 3 will add 260 MW and 1,216 MWh of four-hour storage capacity to the project. Once complete, the full Supernode site will total 780 MW and 3,075 MWh of storage capacity.

Stage 3 has received Generator Performance Standards (GPS) acceptance, a grid-connection milestone that establishes agreed technical performance standards for the project's connection to Australia's National Electricity Market.

"Supernode shows what is possible when storage, power conversion and intelligent controls work together at scale," said Ed Torres, Business Leader Power Conversion & Storage at GE Vernova's Electrification segment.

James Allan, Senior Director at Quinbrook, noted the site has capacity for a further 520 MW of expansion, which could include battery storage, data centers, or a combination of both.

The Supernode project is located at a point in Queensland's electricity transmission network where batteries store electricity when supply is high and discharge it when demand increases.
