Micron launches $10B research lab focused on memory and AI
Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) announced the establishment of Micron Research Labs, a U.S.-based research institution headquartered in Boise, Idaho, backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade.
The institution will focus on memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, packaging, and semiconductor manufacturing. Micron describes the lab as the first dedicated memory research hub of its kind in the United States.
Micron plans to break ground on a Boise facility in 2027 that is designed to host hundreds of researchers. The planned investment will also fund university collaborations, global satellite labs, and ecosystem partnerships.
The new lab is intended to connect Micron researchers with external partners across academia, government, and industry. Research collaborators mentioned in the announcement include Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (imec).
"With a planned $10 billion investment in Micron Research Labs, we are looking around the corner to the memory and compute systems the future will demand," said Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology.
The company said the investment is separate from its previously announced commitment of more than $250 billion in U.S. manufacturing and research and development, which Micron has said will create more than 90,000 jobs.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the investment "will strengthen American innovation, create hundreds of jobs and ensure memory never limits innovation."
Executives from Nvidia, Apple, Applied Materials, and Lam Research each issued statements in support of the announcement, citing long-standing partnerships with Micron.
Micron, which the company describes as the only U.S.-based developer and manufacturer of leading-edge memory, holds more than 62,000 lifetime patents.
