Polar Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: POLA), a Gardena, California-based manufacturer of direct current (DC) power systems, announced it is expanding into military markets for drones, robotics, and unmanned platforms as part of a customer diversification strategy.

According to a press release, current projects include power systems developed with the U.S. Navy Warfare Center Dahlgren supporting high-speed rapid-fire projectile systems, DC power solutions for autonomous targeting platforms built with an unnamed major defense contractor, off-grid power for autonomous border security stations, and DC marine generators being evaluated for unmanned surface vessels.

The company is also developing compact DC generators for mobile battery charging supporting robotics, drones, and communications systems for multiple defense companies and government agencies.

Polar Power noted that military contracts currently involve limited quantities as products move through field testing, qualification, and evaluation phases. The company said awarded military contracts typically generate $1M to $1.5M in annual revenues, and that larger production orders are possible but not assured.

"Polar Power's engineers and staff enjoy the challenges of working with our defense contractors and the various DoD agencies," said Arthur D. Sams, in a statement attributed to a company representative.

The company said it intends to supply field power infrastructure for unmanned systems operating in remote and off-grid environments.
