Galmed's Colospan reports feasibility data on tissue assessment tool
Colospan Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Galmed Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (NASDAQ: GLMD), announced results from a feasibility study supporting the development of an intraoperative colon tissue quality assessment technology, according to a press release.
The prospective, single-arm study enrolled 32 colorectal cancer patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery at three medical centers in Israel. The study demonstrated that quantitative measurement of colon tissue compliance is technically feasible using a novel ex-vivo methodology. Measurements were obtained in all 32 patients with no reported measurement failures or procedure-related technical issues.
The technology is intended to provide surgeons with real-time quantitative data on tissue mechanical properties during colorectal surgery. Colospan said the platform may support surgical decision-making prior to creation of a colorectal anastomosis and could potentially help identify patients at increased risk of developing Low Anterior Resection Syndrome.
The new platform represents a second technology for Colospan, alongside its lead product CG-100, an intraluminal bypass device designed to protect colorectal anastomoses. CG-100 holds FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and CE marking under EU Medical Device Regulation.
Allen Baharaff, President and CEO of Galmed Pharmaceuticals, said the data "give Colospan a strong foundation for the continued development of the platform and support our plans to advance toward future clinical trials and regulatory submissions."
Boaz Assaf, Founder and CEO of Colospan, said the tissue assessment platform "complements CG-100 Intraluminal Bypass Device" and that together the technologies reflect the company's strategy of "developing innovative solutions that address critical challenges across the continuum of colorectal cancer surgery."
Galmed Pharmaceuticals is headquartered in Ramat-Gan, Israel, and focuses on gastrointestinal and oncological development. Colospan is headquartered in Kfar Saba, Israel.
