China retail sales growth slows to 0.6% in July, Macquarie comments

Investing.com -- China's retail sales growth slowed to 0.6% year-over-year in July, down from 1.0% in June, according to a Macquarie report. Retail sales excluding automobiles also decelerated to 2.5% from 3.0% in the previous month.

Gold, silver and jewelry sales fell 10.1% year-over-year in July, worsening from a 3.4% decline in June. The drop reflected weakening demand amid volatile gold prices and high base comparisons.

Cosmetics retail sales increased 6.3% year-over-year in the first seven months of 2026, with July growth moderating to 6.8% from 12.6% in June as the boost from the 618 shopping festival normalized.

Food sales growth slowed to 5.3% year-over-year in July from 7.9% in June, while beverage sales growth decelerated to 3.5% from 5.8%. The slowdown was attributed to intense competition and unfavorable weather conditions.

Catering revenue grew 1.4% year-over-year in July, down from earlier months, reflecting unpredictable weather and cautious consumer sentiment.

Household electronics and video appliance sales declined 1.9% year-over-year in July, compared with an 8.7% decline in June. Offline residential air conditioner retail sales fell 15.4% year-over-year in July, while online sales declined 14.4%.

Furniture sales dropped 8.8% year-over-year in July, compared with a 6.6% decline in June. Housing completions by gross floor area fell 18.5% year-over-year in July.

Sportswear retail sales declined 1.0% year-over-year in July, reversing from 3.9% growth in June.

Hainan offshore duty-free sales grew 17.9% year-over-year during the first seven months of 2026, with July sales growth accelerating to 9% from 2.4% in June.

Automobile sales dropped 17% year-over-year in July, compared with a 16% decline in June. New energy vehicle penetration improved to 65.1% as of July.
