MiniMed (Nasdaq: MMED) announced that its MiniMed Flex™ insulin pump system is now commercially shipping in the U.S. paired with the Instinct sensor, made by Abbott, which the company claims is the world's smallest patient-applied continuous glucose sensor.

The Instinct sensor supports up to 15 days of wear per session. The MiniMed Flex™ is described by the company as its smallest and only app-controlled automated insulin delivery system. It holds up to 300 units of insulin and is compatible with the Extended™ infusion set, which can be worn for up to seven days.

The system is powered by MiniMed's SmartGuard™ algorithm, which automatically adjusts insulin delivery based on real-time glucose readings. It also includes Meal Detection™ technology, designed to help compensate when a meal bolus is missed or carbohydrates are underestimated.

Real-world data from the MiniMed™ 780G system, which uses the same SmartGuard™ algorithm, showed users with recommended settings achieved 80% Time in Range, including more than 90% overnight, according to the company.

The MiniMed Flex™ system is FDA cleared for people with type 1 diabetes ages 7 and older, and for adults 18 and older with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes.

"People with diabetes deserve technology that works hard without asking much in return," said Que Dallara, chief executive officer at MiniMed. "The pump can stay tucked away, the algorithm is working around the clock, and now with Instinct, users can go up to 15 days between sensor changes."

MiniMed Flex™ is also compatible with the previously available Simplera Sync™ sensor. The system launched in the U.S. with Simplera Sync™ earlier this year. According to the press release, customers can order the system with either sensor option.
