Fluence Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: FLNC) and LEAG Clean Power GmbH have begun construction of the Heinersbrück GridBattery, a 400 MWh energy storage project located in eastern Germany, according to a press release from the companies.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2027 and will be co-located with wind and solar generation assets on recultivated former mining land. It will use Fluence's Smartstack modular battery technology. Fluence is responsible for the design, supply, and construction of the system.

The Heinersbrück GridBattery is the second joint project between the two companies. They are also deploying the GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000, a 1 GW / 4 GWh system in the same region. Both projects are part of LEAG Group's GigawattFactory initiative, which repurposes former coal mining sites for renewable energy and storage infrastructure as Germany phases out coal.

Thomas Brandenburg, Managing Director of LEAG Clean Power GmbH, said the Heinersbrück project is the first LEAG Clean Power battery storage system to share a grid connection point with wind and photovoltaic generation assets. "This allows us to store surplus renewable electricity flexibly and make it available when it is needed," he said.

Julian Jansen, Managing Director for Germany at Fluence, noted the company has contracted or deployed 35 projects in Germany with a cumulative capacity of more than 6 GWh.
