Investing.com -- A battery factory owned jointly by General Motors and LG Energy Solution in northeast Ohio will restart production next week after shutting down for seven months.

The Ultium Cells joint-venture plant will resume battery cell manufacturing on Monday, with most laid-off workers returning to their positions, said Tom Gallagher, vice president of operations for Ultium. The facility will employ 1,400 workers in total.

The plant stopped producing battery cells in January after consumer demand for electric vehicles declined.

General Motors and LG Energy Solution operate another joint-venture plant in Tennessee, which has shifted to manufacturing energy storage system batteries instead of electric vehicle batteries.

Earlier this week, Samsung SDI bought General Motors' ownership stake in a separate joint venture between the two companies. That venture involved a battery cell plant under construction in Indiana.
