Lockheed Martin demos drone detection system using 5G and AI

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Keysight Technologies (NYSE: KEYS), ODC and Astris AI conducted a live demonstration of the NetSense Airspace Awareness-as-a-Service system in the Miami area in July, according to a press release from Lockheed Martin.

The system uses existing Verizon 5G network spectrum, ODC's AI-native Radio Access Network software, Nvidia's AI Aerial platform and Keysight's radio frequency simulation tools to detect, track and monitor unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). During the demonstration, the system identified drones and maintained track custody through their flights without modifying existing cellular radio deployments.

The NetSense system analyzes radio frequency signal disturbances using AI to predict and track UAS flight paths and send real-time alerts. Lockheed Martin describes the system as compatible with future 6G Integrated Sensing and Communications technology, with a roadmap toward broader network deployment.

"By working within the established 5G network spectrum, we're able to collaborate with the commercial technology industry and deploy a solution that's ready at the time of need," said Sarah Hiza, senior vice president of Technology and Strategic Innovation at Lockheed Martin.

Astris AI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, will serve as the commercial home for NetSense. The system is planned to be offered as a subscription service that integrates with existing customer security operations. Pilot deployments are scheduled for the second half of 2026 and early 2027, with general commercial availability targeted for 2027. Early access will be limited to select customers.

Lockheed Martin states the system is intended for use at critical infrastructure sites, stadiums, power plants, schools, hospitals and airports, as well as by city, state and federal government customers.
