Trump lifts TikTok ban on federal devices after ownership transfer

August 11, 2026 11:05 AM

Investing.com -- The Trump administration removed restrictions on TikTok use on federal government devices Monday after determining the social media app no longer presents a national security threat following the transfer of its US operations to American investors.

The White House Office of Management and Budget canceled a 2023 directive that blocked the video-sharing service on government equipment due to concerns about TikTok's previous Chinese ownership. The decision follows a Justice Department opinion from last month that found TikTok no longer meets the definition of a "covered application" under a 2022 law that prohibited its use on federal platforms.

The policy change comes after the completion of a deal in January that moved control of TikTok's US business from Chinese parent ByteDance Ltd. to a group of American companies. Oracle Corp. and private equity firm Silver Lake Management LLC lead the consortium. President Donald Trump arranged the transaction to prevent a US ban under a 2024 law that was created over concerns that TikTok and ByteDance might share US user data with Chinese authorities.

The Justice Department stated that TikTok now operates separately from ByteDance and is majority owned by US investors. The app "has revised the content recommendation algorithm and cybersecurity program originally developed by ByteDance to insulate federal government information against the concerning security features that initially motivated the prohibition," according to the department's opinion.

The sale ended a year of disputes over national security issues related to the app's Chinese ties. TikTok and the Beijing government have denied claims by US officials that user data could be misused or that China could use the app to promote specific narratives or spread false information.

Trump has expressed support for TikTok and said the app helped him win the 2024 election. He thanked Chinese leader Xi Jinping for helping facilitate approval of the sale.
