Vishay launches SMD safety capacitors with reduced board footprint

August 11, 2026 11:00 AM

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has introduced a new series of AC line rated ceramic disc safety capacitors in a surface-mount casing, according to a company press release. The SMDY1...S series carries a Y1 rating of 300 VAC and 1500 VDC and is said to reduce board space requirements by up to 40% compared to previous-generation devices.

The single-layer capacitors are designed for EMI/RFI suppression and filtering and comply with IEC 60384-14. They hold certifications from UL, CSA, VDE, ENEC, and CQC. Target applications include industrial motor drives, welding equipment, inverters, uninterruptible power supplies, rail power supplies, HVAC systems, LED drivers, smart home automation, computer switch mode power supplies, AC/DC converters, consumer appliances, and automotive charging stations.

The devices offer an insulation resistance of 10,000 MΩ or greater and an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. Industry standards set those benchmarks at 6,000 MΩ and -40°C to +125°C, respectively. Each unit undergoes 100% production testing covering AC voltage, capacitance, dissipation factor, insulation resistance, and visual inspection.

The surface-mount design supports pick-and-place assembly with a reflow soldering process, removing the manual soldering steps associated with through-hole components. The capacitors are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, with encapsulation made of flame-resistant epoxy resin rated UL 94 V-0. They are available in two case sizes: A (10 pF to 680 pF) and B (1000 pF to 1500 pF).

Samples and production quantities are available now, with a lead time of 12 weeks.
