Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has surpassed all previous IMAX (NYSE: IMAX) releases to become the highest-grossing film in the format's history, accumulating $289 million in under a month of release, according to a company statement.

The film earned $37 million on IMAX screens in its fourth weekend, accounting for more than 26% of its total global box office. IMAX reported $52 million in total global box office for the weekend, marking its fourth consecutive weekend above $50 million — a streak the company said had never previously reached even two consecutive weekends at that level.

In North America, The Odyssey has generated $147 million in IMAX ticket sales, which the company claims is the highest domestic total for any IMAX release. Internationally, the film earned $28.5 million in its fourth weekend, including a debut in South Korea that the company described as the highest-grossing IMAX opening weekend in that market.

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said the film "continues to exceed" expectations, adding that its performance is "headlining what we expect will be our best year ever at the global box office."

The 41 IMAX 70mm Film locations worldwide have collectively grossed $37.5 million to date. The TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles has taken in $2.8 million, which IMAX identifies as the highest single-title gross for any IMAX location in North America.

The Odyssey is the first theatrical film shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras. Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema worked with IMAX to develop a next-generation camera called The Keighley, along with a compatible sound blimp. A total of 2.1 million feet of IMAX film was used during production.

The film is scheduled to continue playing in the IMAX network through at least September 17, with releases in China and Japan still to come. The company reported approximately $40 million in pre-sales for future showtimes.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day also contributed to IMAX's weekend results, earning $9.8 million on its North American IMAX debut and an additional $3.8 million in China and Japan, bringing its IMAX total to over $42 million.
