IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sandia National Laboratories to explore co-design of quantum information science technologies for U.S. national security applications, according to a press release from the company.

The agreement covers technical areas including system optimization, device development, characterization and testing, and the advancement of quantum computing and networking capabilities. Work under the MOU will take place at Sandia's Quantum Demonstration Facility in New Mexico, a research hub established to support public-private collaboration in quantum technologies.

Toby Townsend, Associate Laboratories Director for Deterrence, Science and Energy at Sandia, said the partnership "leverages the strengths of both organizations to accelerate innovation in quantum computing and networking" and aims to "translate cutting-edge research into practical solutions that address critical government missions."

Dr. Rick Muller, SVP and Chief Scientist at IonQ Federal, noted that Sandia previously fabricated the ion traps used in IonQ's earliest quantum computers. "What's new is the scope," he said. "We're putting our hardware and applications teams alongside Sandia's expertise in trapped-ion fabrication and silicon photonics."

The Quantum Demonstration Facility offers third-party verification for pathways to utility-scale quantum computers and communicates findings to U.S. government stakeholders. IonQ said the collaboration also expands its operational presence into New Mexico.
