Red Hat has announced the formation of asago, an open source community project intended to automate the translation of AI governance policies into deployed AI systems. The project is currently in its formation phase, according to a press release from the company.

The project, whose name stands for AI Safety And Governance Orchestration, is designed to connect compliance requirements with engineering workflows through an automated, auditable process. It is released under the Apache License 2.0 and targets four stages: risk mapping, risk assessment, risk mitigation, and production deployment.

Founding participants include Red Hat, Alquimia AI, Brave Software, EvalEval coalition, IBM Research, Interdisciplinary Transformation University Austria, Microsoft, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, North Carolina State University, Nvidia, and The Alan Turing Institute.

The platform is designed to output configurations compatible with Kubernetes, Terraform, and Ansible, and is intended to work across hybrid cloud and on-premises environments. It maps policy language to established frameworks including the NIST AI RMF, OWASP LLM Top 10, and the EU AI Act via the IBM AI Risk Atlas.

"As organizations transition from experimental AI pilots to long-running, autonomous agents, establishing clear operational guardrails becomes a critical infrastructure requirement," said Steven Huels, vice president of AI Engineering at Red Hat.

Microsoft's chief product officer for Responsible AI, Sarah Bird, said the company is joining the community to help build AI that is "safe, secure, and worthy of people's trust," noting that open standards can help create more consistent governance across the ecosystem.

Nvidia vice president of Software Security Daniel Rohrer said the project "demonstrates how Red Hat, Nvidia and our ecosystem are strengthening agent security with open source tools," building on the two companies' work within the Open Secure AI Alliance.

Developers, academic researchers, and enterprise early adopters can access the repository and participate in project governance through GitHub. Red Hat is a subsidiary of IBM (NYSE: IBM).
