Imax Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) reported $257 million in global box office for July, which the company said is the highest grossing month in its history, 47% above its previous monthly record. The results were driven largely by Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, a Universal Pictures release that has generated $221 million in total Imax box office since opening.

In its third weekend, The Odyssey earned $44.7 million in Imax, making it the fastest film in Imax history to surpass $200 million in global Imax box office, according to the company. Imax said it was also the first time the company recorded three consecutive weekends of $50 million or more in global box office.

In North America, the film earned $22.1 million across 443 Imax locations, representing 43% of the film's domestic box office for the weekend. Internationally, it earned $22.6 million across 450 locations, accounting for 26% of the international box office. The film has become the highest grossing Imax release of all time in 24 markets, including Mexico, Italy, Turkey, the UAE, and India.

Imax 70mm Film locations, numbering 41 worldwide, generated $5.1 million over the weekend, averaging $673,000 per location. Cumulative Imax 70mm Film box office stands at $27.6 million, representing 12% of the film's total Imax gross.

The film is described by Imax as the first theatrical release shot entirely with Imax Film Cameras. Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema worked with Imax to develop a next-generation film camera called The Keighley, along with a new sound blimp.

Imax said the film ranks as its highest-grossing collaboration with Nolan and its third-highest-grossing Imax release overall. Major market debuts in China, Japan, and South Korea have yet to occur. The company reported nearly $60 million in pre-sales, with the film scheduled to remain in the Imax network through at least September 17.
